Description

Last year's Saturn two weeks after closest approach to Earth.

Integrated eleven four minute runs to produce this view of the ringed planet following 2021 opposition on August 2.  Was blessed with some steady seeing between 10 and 11pm local time as Saturn neared its maximum elevation of 73.5°.  Transparency was variable with high level cirrus cover.

I decided to go easy on sharpening and saturation for this treatment, resultant image is a closer analogue of telescopic appearance with subtle colour differentiation between atmospheric bands all the way towards the North Pole.

The Hexagon feature is now difficult to resolve due to a much decreased tilt of the rings compared with 2020.  There's enough resolution in the data to show the Encke Gap, C ring and slight rippling of the NEB boundary.  It was also a bit too late to observe Seeliger effect one fortnight pass opposition.  I haven't been taking many images of Saturn in 2021 so reasonably happy with this effort.  Other captures are from April, May and June with the planet sporting a smaller apparent diameter.
