Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a pair of merging galaxies located 0.6 billion light years away in the constellation of Pisces at a declination of +9 degrees.  The main bright portion of this object spans 30 arc-seconds in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 80,0000 light years.  The total length of the object, including the beautiful star stream tails, is 500,000 light years.

Although the central bright portion of this object is only slightly larger than the current size of Venus, it still contains a lot of detail. The 2 former galaxy cores are clearly seen, along with dust lanes and a bright blue star cloud.  The star cloud appears to have multiple bright areas.

It is difficult to see, but the bottom star stream bends upward faintly, making the total lengths of these arms even longer.

I am surprised that this interesting object has attracted so little attention.  Dr. Arp did not include it in his peculiar galaxy catalog and the Hubble has not imaged it yet.
