Description

This object is an open star cluster located 3200 light years away in the constellation of Puppis at a declination of -37 degrees. This magnitude 6 cluster of 40 stars spans 1 degree in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 60 light years.

The cluster does not stand out extremely well from the background. As with any cluster, it helps to stare at an isolated part of the background away from the cluster for awhile (say, the lower right corner area), until you eyes adjust to the background field. It is then easy to spot the cluster, which spans in an irregular shape from lower left to upper right.

An interesting carbon star (BM IV 68) can be seen in the high resolution view just to the right of the center of the image. It is identifiable by its deep red star border, deep orange central region, and tiny size. Several other smaller carbon stars can be seen in the lower left of the cluster.

Some call this the Wounded Heart cluster or the Heart & Dagger cluster, both of which are a huge stretch of the imagination for me. It continues to amaze, as seen in the Letters section of the latest Jan 2020 Sky & Telescope magazine, why humans insist on forcing names that don't fit on these beautiful objects.
