Description

A spectacular interacting galaxy pair, NGC 474/NGC 470 (Arp 227), 100 million light years away. NGC 474 is an elliptical galaxy with prominent shell and tidal tail structure, thought to be a result of past merger with a smaller galaxy and an ongoing interaction with its neighbor, NGC 470. The outer portions of the NGC 474 tidal envelope are probably formed by the material lost by NGC 470, while the inner shells seem to be a result of a minor merger a few billion years ago. Also seen in the image is a more distant (~240 million light years away) lenticular galaxy NGC 467 that shows multiple shells and tidal tails.

This LRGB image was created using the data collected with my mobile setup, the 10" f/4 Lacerta PhotoNewton and ZWO ASI294MM Pro camera riding on the Orion HDX-110 EQ-G mount.
