Description

This object is one of several HII regions located in the constellation of Auriga at a declination of +36 degrees.

As shown in the mouseover, the largest region is Sh2-232. The brightest region to the lower right is Sh2-235. To the right of that is Sh2-231, and then finally the smallest HII region, Sh2-233. Interesting that Sh2-234 is located quite some distance away, far out of frame. My closeup image of is Sh2-235 is here.

I like the bright HII bands and the dark dust lanes which flow through Sh2-232. This beautiful object has the sordid nicknames of the Jelly Doughnut Nebula and the Pumpkin Nebula.

Seen near the center of Sh2-232, and identified in the mouseover, is the planetary nebula PK173+03.1. A second PN, PK173+02.1, is also shown on the mouseover. However, as you can tell from its irregular shape, this object is not a PN and instead is a HII region.
