Description

The "Leo Triplet" is a group of galaxies in the constellation Leo. They are not only aligned along our observation axis, but are actually rather close together and thought to have interacted. NGC 3628, a heavily disturbed (maybe barred) edge-on spiral, at the left has a long tidal tail which I can see in the raw data but just cannot stretch out. I will add more data in the next season for that. On the right there are M65 (top) and M66 (bottom). M65 is currently low in star formation but is thought to have undergone a starburst and contains a radio source of unknown origin close to the center. M66 has an easily seen central bar which is taken as a hint to tidal interaction.

I really like all three of these galaxies. Due to their interaction, they show interesting structure, and I think the dust lanes really come out nicely. Even with almost 20h exposure, the tidal tail of NGC 3628 is only very faintly visible above it.
