Description

Last night, as clouds suddenly cleared a bit, I captured the Moon through three filters in a rush. Although it would make the setup a bit more shaky, next time, I should use a filter wheel in order to keep the same orientations and centers.

Although seeing (which wasn't that bad) varied even within a few minutes in addition to some wind gusts, my personal preference is the IR640nm pass filter.

In spite of the shortest exposure time and lowest gain, both visual images are inferior in terms of resolution, while the images through the IR742nm sacrifice a bit of resolution because of the longer wavelength. As theory would suggest, at moderate seeing the IR640nm is the best compromise. It has been so with my 6" Newton and it is so also with the Celestron 8. However, with larger scopes which are more prone to bad seeing, an IR742nm may be the superior choice as the larger aperture compensates well for detail loss at longer wavelengths.

All images are stacks of 400/4000 frames in mono8, 10-bit ADC, 1.5x drizzled. Near equal processing includes curve stretch, crop and high-pass filter with 80% opacity, no noise treatment, sharpen in AS!3 only.

Not uploaded this time, I also made a few close-ups with a 2x barlow at FL=4060mm through the IR640nm filter, but seeing was not good enough for producing keepers. A 1.5x barlow would be better suited for the C8 as 4 meters focal length appears to be its optical limit.

Clouds and rain will rule the coming week in that I won't bother you that soon again, though I'd really love to :-)
