Description

Red Planet before dawn on Sat 29 Aug 2020 AEST.

Had a nearly two hour imaging run starting shortly after 3am with Mars at its highest. Maximum altitude is now less than 50 degrees from my location as the planet continues to move northward. To compensate for the effects of atmosphericdispersion I have decided to start using the corrector this opposition. This is the best three minute stack out of 30 OSC runs taken at various focal ratios. Additional length in the imaging train increases F number considerably but after comparing results from alternative setups (including drizzle option in AutoStakkert) I've decided to keep this combination (using Meade 2x short-focus barlow lens).

Shield volcano hemisphere is on view here with Amazonis, Olympus Mons and Tharsis Ridge approaching the terminator. Southerly Ascraeus Mons is sporting an evening shadow to its east and there appears to be a semi circular orographic cloud on top of Arsia Mons. The peaks appear pinkish in colour compared to the surrounding plain.

In the south albedo features of Mare Sirenum, Memnonia, Aonius Sinus and Solis Lacus stretch from P to F limb. The South Polar Cap has now shrunk considerably and there is a hint of dust activity to its immediate west. Opposite pole is showing signs of ice build up as the northern autumn commences.
