Description

M51 - The Whirlpool Galaxy. You can see how M51 is interacting with NGC 5195 - the smaller of the 2 galaxies. M51 was the first galaxy to be classified as a spiral galaxy. In the night sky, these galaxies are in the constellation Canes Venatici. They are approximately 31 million light years from earth!

In addition to M51 and NGC 5195, there are at least 3 other galaxies visible in this image - NGC 5198, NGC 5169, IC 4263 and IC 4278. Click on the image to zoom in and see them all.
