Description

After shooting M74 from 8 PM to 1 AM during the "calm before the storm", I needed something to complete the night. Knowing I may not be able to shoot color during this short dark cycle, I decided to shoot only R for the Horsehead Nebula. This provided maximum contrast in the horse area and also helped to lower the blue internal reflections from the very bright star Alnitak. You can see these faint reflections entering on the left as two beams.

"The Horsehead Nebula is a small dark nebula in the constellation Orion. The nebula is located just to the south of Alnitak, the easternmost star of Orion's Belt, and is part of the much larger Orion Molecular Cloud Complex.

The Horsehead Nebula is approximately 1,400 light years from Earth."
