Description

This was an extremely difficult target to image and process. I had initially planned on 4 days of imaging time. This is three days of images, around 24 hours total. I felt a bit like I was getting to the point of diminishing returns as each subsequent day was doing very little for the overall image. OIII and SII were almost non-existent, and the 9 hours of HA I got looked like what you would get after 3 hours on a bright target. I had to remove the stars to process each channel separately, then stretch multiple times to get them to a visible level. I mapped the three images to the standard SHO palette, then went in and selectively tone mapped separate areas to neutralize the grays and bring out some better coloring.

I did a separate process on the stars to get very close to RGB. I mapped HA to Red, 50% SII and 50% OIII to Green, and OIII only to Blue. Then some saturation and slight color tweak provides some really nice looking stars.

It took several hours to process, but I think it was worth the effort. It's a really pretty subject. Hope you like it.
