Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a spiral galaxy and companion located 0.8 billion light years away in the constellation of Coma Berenices at a declination of +14 degrees. This object, spanning 30 arc-seconds, is one of the smallest Arp objects in terms of our apparent view. This galaxy was classified by Dr. Arp into the category of Spiral Galaxies with Small, High Surface Brightness Companions on Arms.

The primary galaxy here, MCG+03-34-012, is a magnitude 15.5 blue grand design spiral galaxy with an orange core. It has a Milky Way-size diameter of 130,000 light years. Unlike some Arp objects in this category, measurements show that the orange object (VV 298b) just below and left is a true companion at the same distance. I like the distortion in the main galaxy arm just above the companion.

The small galaxy to the left is MCG+03-34-013, a magnitude 17.3 galaxy which is about the same distance away.
