Description

This object is a beautiful face-on spiral galaxy located 50 million light years away in the constellation of Ursa Major at a declination of +44 degrees. This 10.4 magnitude galaxy spans 5 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to an actual diameter of 75,000 light years.

The detailed disk surrounding the bright tight core is sprinkled with blue star clusters and pink HII regions. The arm structure is fascinatingly asymmetric. On the lower right portion of the disk, the arms appear in segments that are tightly bunched. But in the upper left part of the disk, the arms take on a widely spaced unusual but regular pattern. The disk has been disturbed but I don’t see any companions.
