Description

First attempt at colour narrowband using the previously acquired H-alpha image together with just under 2 hours of O-III data. I'm hoping to shoot some S-II as well to give me 3 channels worth of data that I can map to RGB but I suspect I'll need quite a few hours total integration time to get much detail in S-II.

It took a few goes to produce an image without strong colour casts but by doing more of the work in APP it meant less to do in Affinity Photo and a better result overall. I used the combine RGB tool in APP to create the image as LRGB with L and R using the Ha data, and G and B using the O-III data.

This was quite a learning curve and it would benefit from taking a lot more subs, especially for the fainter emission lines. There are a couple of lines on the image where the images from the two different sessions didn't line up properly and cropping them out would have removed too much of picture so I left them.

The revised image uses another 33 minutes of O-III subs taken during a later imaging session after I'd been imaging the target in S-II. That gave me 4 hours total integration time for the HOO image. All images were taken using my new full-spectrum modified FujiFilm X-A3. Its sensitivity in the deep red is remarkable and I've been very impressed by how much I've been able to capture with a cheap OSC camera.

Description: Second attempt at processing this image with another 33 minutes of O-III data added, bringing the total to 150 minutes. I prefer the colour and higher contrast, but it's a fine balancing act to make the nebulae stand out and show their detail without raising the contrast so much that the faint nebulosity in the region is lost.

Narrowband imaging saved the day yet again! The additional O-III subs were taken during poor seeing from a light polluted suburban garden. Someone with more skill could probably have obtained good results even shooting broadband colour images, but the sheer number of very short exposures that would be needed to get a worthwhile final image would dramatically increase the already lengthy processing time.
