Description

Stock 2, the Muscleman Cluster, is a Trumpler class I 2 m open cluster of approximately 54 stars of magnitude 9-10 with an angular span of a degree of arc in Cassiopeia. Often overlooked an magnitude 4.4, it is near the more familiar Double Cluster, and is better known as a binocular target.

Stock 2 appears visually larger than the Double Cluster, and although it spans 18 light years, both of the components of the Double Cluster are over three times as large. Stock 2 is "only" 1050 light years away, compared to the more distant Double Cluster at 7500 light years.

Also visible in the same field of view is the beautiful double star STTA 26 with yellow and bluish-white components with magnitudes of 6.85 and 7.30, and a separation of 63" at Position Angle 201.

This is a two-panel mosaic, each panel consisting of 16 frames of 180s exposures taken at ISO 800.
