Description

A brief break today from Arp imaging to bring you this object, a spiral galaxy located 65 million light years away in the constellation of Ursa Major at a declination of +50 degrees. This galaxy spans 3.5 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 70,000 light years. Our view is about 15 degrees from edge-on.

I like the strong intermediate dust lanes and the fragmented arms. The inner core is bright. The best part for me is the faint star streams around the outer edge of the disk.

I find the Hubble image of the mouseover to be hard to understand. The faint outer star streams are barely seen. Plus, the tone and saturation of the blue star color does not look natural to me. The stars are all the same bright blue tone. Perhaps those of you with more experience interpreting or processing NASA Hubble images could help me better understand this one.
