Description

English Version
The Rho Ophiuchi cloud is a giant molecular cloud in the Milky Way galaxy composed partly of ionized hydrogen and dark dust. It owes its name to the star that dominates the region in which it is located, ρ Ophiuchi, itself located three degrees north of Antares, in the constellation of Ophiuchus.

With an average distance of only 130 parsecs (420 light-years), it is one of the closest star-forming regions to the Solar System. It belongs to the galactic ensemble of the Scorpio-Centaur association, which is the source of the initial compression that caused the star formation process within it. Morphologically, the Rho Ophiuchi complex appears divided into two main clouds, which are designated LDN 1688, which forms the main core, and LDN 1689, which is lower in mass. Several dark nebulous filaments are additionally connected to the two clouds.

Thanks to its proximity, this cloud provides an interesting area for research into the early evolution of low-mass stars and brown dwarfs, as well as a laboratory for studying chain star formation phenomena.
