Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a pair of galaxies located 180 million light years away in the constellation of Ursa Major at a declination of +68 degrees. It was classified by Dr. Arp into the category of Double Galaxies.

The galaxy at lower right is UGC 5028. It has an apparent size of 35 arc-seconds and is 35,000 light years in diameter. Its larger companion at upper left is UGC 5029, with a diameter of 80,000 light years.

The structures of these galaxies are disturbed and asymmetric. Each galaxy has an odd coloring, with blue and yellow interspersed. My mind wants to connect this pair with a star stream bridge, but my eyes are saying that it isn’t quite connected.

There are several interesting linear features in and around these galaxies. These could be distant galaxies in the background, but I believe that these unusual features might belong to these 2 galaxies.
