Description

IC 63 is an emission nebula in the constellation Cassiopeia in the northern sky. This nebula and the reflection nebula IC 59 are located near the bright star Gamma Cassiopeiae. The star is physically only 3 to 4 light years away from the nebulae. IC 63 is somewhat closer to γ Cas and glows predominantly in red H-alpha light. IC 59 is further away from the star and has proportionally fewer H-alpha emissions, but more of the characteristic blue color. The object was discovered in 1890 by the Welsh astronomer Isaac Roberts
