Description

This image captures 3 Arp objects (Arp 48, Arp 88 & Arp 119) in a framing within a field radius of 0.23 degrees, representing the tightest framing of 3 Arp objects in the entire Arp catalog.

The focus of this description is Arp 88, as seen in the mouseover.  Descriptions which focus on the other 2 Arp objects are linked here - Arp 48 and Arp 119

Arp 88, also known as LEDA 4728, is a small spiral galaxy located in the constellation of Pisces at a declination of +12 degrees.  In his Arp catalog, Dr. Arp classified this object into the category of Spiral Galaxies with Large, High Surface Brightness Companions on Arms.

Arp 88 is not an impressive object.  A bluish companion is visible at the end of its left spiral arm.   No distance information is available for either object.  As Dr. Arp assumed, I believe it could be a companion based on the slight deformations in the galaxy arms of the main galaxy.  But even with this companion, Arp 88 is an underwhelming sight.  Fortunately there are other interesting objects in the same field of view to keep things interesting here.
