Description

Imaged on nights of 9/6/2020, 9/10/2020, 9/15/2020, 9/16/2020.

Abell 47 (PK 30+3.1) is an oval shaped planetary nebula in Serpens.

It is very small at 0.4x0.3 arc minutes. Magnitude is listed as 19.5 which would make it the dimmest of the Abell PNs. It was dim, but I did not find it that dim. There was no Oiii and my 29 Ha subs gave a decent rendition, and you can even detect it on individual Ha subs. It appears as a smooth oval with no features except brighter in the middle, diminishing steadily toward the edges.

A strong yellow star is somewhat in the center. Hard to tell if it is the radiation source. Probably not. Looks just like a bunch of others nearby.

I could not find a single color image of this PN on the web, and only 2 mono. This is the first on Astrobin.

Eric Honeycutt is a visual observer who has observed all the Abells visually, and surprising to me, he needed the Oiii filter to see it. It was the last one he bagged after many unsuccessful attempts, confirming its dimness and small size. I am very impressed with someone who would drive 4 hours one way to observe a single PN. So easy comparatively for me to just set up my sequence and go to bed. Get up in the morning and have some great images.
