Description

Here we have the Jellyfish nebula IC443 in Gemini.

I'm continuing to work with this FRA400 72mm quintuplet and figure this was a good target for its wide-field, especially with the 0.7x reducer.

I am usually a shorter exposure imager but after doing some reading and thinking, I thought I would try to do some much longer subs to see what I could learn. I went with 10-minute subs with an 7nm Ha filter with this image. I was concerned about transient events (airplanes, etc) killing some frames but I was pleasantly surprised that out of the 47 frames I was able to make, I only had to toss a few. Still, I am plagued with halos. Not sure of what the cause is and i'm beginning to think it might be a result of fast optics. In any case, I believe I will eventually figure it out.

I decided to post this one as a monochrome image as I don't think I will be having much time to do imaging in the coming weeks but I think this subject is one that is pleasing in monochrome.

I like to use "starnet++" for masks. When I used it to make a maks I intended to use for LHT, I was somewhat startled at how interesting this looked devoid of stars. So I decided to put a little work into a starless version as well.

Lastly, on the starless versions, I also tried to use Topaz as a tool as well. I found that even the smallest adjustments of the sliders had a rather large effect on the image and limited both the NR and sharpening to 1.

Anyway, I hope you like it and as always, comments/criticism welcomed!
