Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a galaxy group located 400 million light years away in the constellation of Draco at a declination of +57 degrees.

I love the variety of objects and structures in this field of view. The largest galaxy and the anchor of this group is the elliptical galaxy NGC 6370, located to the upper right just below the bright star (HD 158013). This magnitude 13 galaxy spans 1.7 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a huge diameter of 200,000 light years. A number of shell structures are faintly visible in the galaxy halo, likely remnants of past mergers.

Most of the other galaxies in the image are a similar distance away. My favorite is the double ring galaxy (LEDA 60230) near the center of the image, which is accompanied by a very faint distorted barred ring galaxy just below it.
