Description

While M78 may technically refer to only the brightest reflection nebula at the center, there's a lot more happening in the area! Several other reflection nebula, dark dust, and a background hydrogen alpha glow make for a somewhat chaotic but interesting area.

Here's how it was processed:

Each R, G and B
dynamic crop
ABE

RGB
channel combination
PCC
generalized hyperbolic stretch
make a copy for starless processing
make a copy to generate a star mask with starXterminator

starless
starnet2
TGV denoise
LHE (2 scales)
dark structure enhance
sharpen
curves for contrast & color
pixel math in stars RGB using star mask
SCNR to remove some green noise

Normally I'd include all the nights and exposure info but I used the Normalize Scale Gradient script which has a habit of rejecting bad subs. In this case it rejected about ⅓ of my subs thanks to passing clouds. So all I have is the total integration time that made it though to the end. The subs were acquired between 20 Jaun 2022 and 12 Feb 2022.
