Description

Eta Carina and Homunculus Nebulae

OTA: CDK 24” Telescope Live CHI-1

The main image is the Eta Carinae nebula from the Southern hemisphere and an oversized box where the inserted Homunculus nebula occurs. This rendering combines the extracted Ha, SII, and OIII emission lines with the RGB channels all mapped to true color and blended with the RGB stacks. This Carinae nebula is best seen in Image B.

Image B features the Carinae Nebula rendered by combining the extracted Ha, SII, and OIII emission lines with the RGB channels, all mapped to true color and blended with the RGB stacks.

Image C is the Homunculus Nebula, a stunning bipolar nebula famously captured by HST. but it is very small: only 18 arcseconds across! Furthermore, it is associated with the brightest star in the field, Eta Carinae itself whose glair robs the Homunculus of much of its color and detail. This grayscale rendering is in OIII, the filter set that appeared to have the resolution (and smalles-appearing central star) to be worth an attempt to reveal the Homunculus Nebula. The famous HST image was shot through red and ultraviolet filters; the OIII line is in the blue-green, so the features will probably not be the same ones HST captured.

I hope you all enjoy these images….
