Description

VDB 158 is a faint reflection nebula in the constellation Andromeda that seemingly undergoes an odd, 90-degree bend. The overall shape of the brighter part is similar to an axe or hatchet. VDB 158 is part of the larger area of nebulosity LBN 534.

The RGB data for this project were acquired at a very good Bortle 2/3 dark site on a night with excellent conditions. I wish I could have shot the luminance at the dark site too, but the following night was too windy to sit out in a field, so I decided to shoot it from home in my Bortle 4/5 backyard. Since the object was nearly overhead, the effects of light pollution were not too bad.

Also visible in this image is the tiny planetary nebula PLN 110-12.1. Good luck finding it!
