Description

I used my new ZWO ASI 462MC camera to image the crater Endymion. I bought the camera principally for its sensitivity in IR, where it is at least 4-5X more sensitive than my trusty ZWO ASI 174MM. However, it is a colour camera but the bayer matrix filters all pass the IR photons.

In setting up the camera I was also interested to see what it could do when imaging the Moon in colour. As some of you may know I am a proponent of colour imaging of the Moon, as I feel a colour image brings so much more to the eye than a monochrome image. However, I do understand the reasons that many lunar imagers prefer monochrome imaging with an IR filter and they produce many wonderful images this way.

With the Moon almost full (95% illuminated), I applied a 2X Barlow, to get a close up view of the magnificent crater Endymion. It is located on the north east limb of the moon just east of Mare Frigoris. The crater is quite large at 125 kms diameter but it is significantly foreshortened and elliptical in shape due to its proximity to the lunar limb.

The floor of the carter is quite dark and smooth. I love the long shadows of the peaks on its rim as they stretch out across its expanse. Being right on the limb we are able to look directly at the opposite wall of the crater and to see the undulations there.

I am showing this orientation because it is a little easier for the eye to comprehend. Revision B shows it at the aspect I saw it from the Southern Hemisphere.
