Description

Can't let a winter go by without imaging the Orion Nebula! I nabbed some narrowband (hydrogen-alpha and oxygen-III) data in between other nightly targets on November 30 and December 1, and I'm quite happy with the result!

This incredible nebula is located 1,344 lightyears away in the constellation Orion, at the tip of his imaginary sword hanging from his belt. It is about 24 lightyears across, or nearly 20,000x the width of the main part of the solar system! New stars are born in this stellar nursery, and it is the energetic stellar winds of young stars within the nebula that carve out its unique shape.

I took two exposure times -- 1 minute and 5 minutes. The 1m exposures revealed the core but kept it from being oversaturated, while the 5m exposures unveiled the dimmer portions of the nebula. I used HDRComposition and HDRTransformation in PixInsight to combine the two exposures together before combining the Ha and OIII into a color image in the HOO palette. Combining the data into a color image after I applied HDRMT helped to preserve the color in the core.
