Description

A celestial rose of HII gas surrounds the open cluster NGC 2244 in the constellation Monoceros, and is popularly known as the Rosette nebula. Also catalogued as Caldwell 49, the Rosette nebula is located near one end of a giant molecular cloud, and the stars in the associated open cluster which formed from the hydrogen gas are catalogued as Caldwell 50. Together, they form one of the most beautiful, and imaged, regions of the winter sky.

The Rosette nebula is located approximately 5,200 light years from Earth, and the hot, young stars in the cluster supply the ultraviolet radiation required to power the emission. The nebula spans nearly 100 light years.

In 2019, the Oklahoma state legislature designated the Rosette nebula as the official state astronomical object.
