Description

This object is a series of reflection and dark nebulae located 1000 light years away in the constellation of Aries at a declination of +30 degrees. At that distance, this image spans a width of 35 light years. This field of view is very close to the famous object NGC 1333, which is just partly visible in the upper right corner of the image. I have included an annotated image to help explain the description below.

vdB 16 is the blue reflection nebula to the upper left, illuminated by the star BD+29 565. vdB 13 is the blue reflection nebula seen towards the right edge of the image, close to center, illuminated by the star BD+30 540. The dark nebuale Barnard 202 through 206 are also seen in the image.

This is an area rich in faint Herbig–Haro (HH) objects, which are small reddish arcs of nebulosity located in dark nebulae and associated with newborn stars. The most visible ones here are RNO14 (seen to the lower left of vdB 13), HH422 (seen to the right of vdB 16), and HH14 (seen in the upper right corner).
