Description

The diffuse nebula of emission NGC 2237, in the constellation of the Unicorn, is commonly known by the designation "Rosette Nebula". It was discovered by John Flamsteed around 1690. It forms a luminous halo, more or less circular, about 80 'in diameter. It is a vast cloud of hydrogen ionized by the ultraviolet radiation of the stars of the NGC 2244 cluster, visible in the central part of the image, and consisting of very young and hot stars. These stars were formed from nebular material only four million years ago and now their stellar winds are clearing the central part of the nebula. This nebula also includes a lot of interstellar dust. The great abundance of hydrogen is at the origin of the red color that can be seen in the image. Its distance is 5000 light years and has a diameter of 100 light years.

Different NGC numbers were assigned to the various objects that make it up: 2237, 2238, 2239 and 2246. According to the Uranometria 2000 celestial atlas, the brightest star is not part of the NGC 2244 cluster.
