Description

The Elephant's trunk nebula is located in Cepheus around 2,400 ly from Earth (Wikipedia). It is an emission nebula and the Elephan's trunk measures 20 light-years (APOD).

This was a lengthy project, determined by my objective of improving the SNR in the region and revealing the faint nebular structures coupled with some guiding issues. I restarted the processing a few times in order to keep the best balance between detail preservation and noise reduction (very faint details were lost even with very light NR when zooming maximally). The nebula offers a very rich palette, which gave me the impression of a psychedelic cosmic dream.

Description: This is practically a reprocess using the new Normalize Gradient Script by John Murphy, before the final integration. It brought a significant improvement in noise and gradient for the OIII and SII layer. I will start using it systematically in my workflow, it's really a game changer. The stars were also improved in the final version and I could control noise better (visible in full version, the adjusted one looks sharpened by astrobin).
