Description

This object is a rarely imaged pair of Magellanic spiral galaxies located only 11 million light years away in the constellation of Camelopardalis at a declination of +69 degrees. A Magellanic spiral galaxy is considered to be an intermediate galaxy type between dwarf spiral galaxies and irregular galaxies.

NGC 2366 is the larger galaxy on the left, which spans 8 arc-minutes in our apparent view and corresponds to a small diameter of 25,000 light years. The bright star-forming region towards the bottom of the galaxy is Markarian 71.

NGC 2363 is the smaller star cloud to the right, which was originally thought to be part of NGC 2366 but is now considered to be a separate galaxy.

The tiny white small smudge near the midpoint of both objects is a distant spiral galaxy, 2MASX J07284539+6912186.
