Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a planetary nebula is located 9500 light years away in the constellation of Lupus at a declination of -35 degrees.  It is a magnitude 12.5 PN which spans 1 arc-minute in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 3 light years.

The OIII signal is stronger than the HII signal throughout.  The nebula is very unusual, with a diffuse hexagon-shaped rim, the hint of an inner ring, and some structure.  The bright blue progenitor star is slightly offset from the center.

Looking at this image, it is hard to believe that scientists thought that this was a galaxy for a long time.  It was identified as an elliptical galaxy when it was first discovered in 1932.  Later, in 1953, it was confirmed to be a planetary nebula.
