Description

M78 is a reflection nebula located in the constellation Orion about 1,600 light-years away from Earth. Discovered in 1780 by Pierre Mechain it is also commonly known as the Casper the Friendly Ghost Nebula. M78 is illuminated over an expanse of 4 light-years by the energy of its embedded bright blue early B-type stars.
