Description

The California Nebula (NGC 1499, Sharpless 220) is an emission nebula located in the constellation Perseus. Within the Orion Arm of our Galaxy, most estimates place the nebula about 1500 light years away. The rich hydrogen red color actually comes from the energy of a blue star, known as Xi Persei. I was able to capture this image in October during a stretch of clear skies while on vacation. Here is my version of the California Nebula:
