Description

This image capture a pair of objects located 1300 light years away in the constellation of Monoceros at a declination of -10 degrees.

At image center is the reflection nebula NGC 2149, located 1300 light years away. This nebula spans 3 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of just over 1 light year. The nebula is accentuated by a superimposed dark nebula Dobashi 5004, just above and left of the brightest portion of NGC 2149. I like the various subtle colors which are seen throughout the nebula.

Between image center and the upper left corner is the blue reflection nebula vdB 66, which is about half of the apparent size of NGC 2149. Although it appears to be smaller to us than NGC 2149, it is actually larger since it is much further away (3300 light years).
