I present to you the Phantom of the Opera nebula as I saw it from my terrace in Sofia on the night of 26th of September.

The object is right on the background of the Milky Way so as you can see there are countless stars in the frame. So many stars that they make the object difficult to see and process. However for me the "superstar" of this image lies somewhere else. As I image under the city lights I use Dynamic Background Extraction on all of my images. This means that I have to set reference points all over my photo in order to make a better model of the background. While doing this operation I saw my special guest and I was quite excited from my finding.

It turns out that my image contains the planetary nebula Outters 2. This is the information that I was able to find on the Internet:
"Ou 2 (PN G 120.4-01.3) was discovered by chance by Nicolas Outters in November 2010 while he was taking a deep Ha image of the nearby nebula Sh2-173. Ou 2 is about 80 arcsecs in diameter, and has a very faint but intensely blue central star measured at magnitude 19.5. Ou 2 is very close to a small, faint open cluster, NGC 136."

I am quite excited from my "catch" as I was able to find this object by chance from my terrace under the city lights. I think that the inner star with magnitude 19.5 is visible in my image as well.

This image made my day. I love astrophotography!

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
