Description

The Tarantula Nebula (NGC 2070) and its neighborhood in the LMC.

The Tarantula is a gigantic nebula in the LMC, 49 kiloparsecs away and 500 kiloparsecs in size, and still bright enough to be easily spotted in wide angle shots. It is produced by the compression of gasses against the interstellar medium at the edge of the LMC, which also produces bursts of star formation and a truly magnificent sight anywhere you point.

Finding the Tarantula nebula through star hopping is an amazing experience. Each step of the way an interesting object pops up.

In this shot, we can see the Tarantula in all its glory, but also the young blue populus clusters around it. The amount of star formation in this region is mindboggling, and one can never tire of imaging this.

Since the LMC never sets but is rather low on the sky when I get to image it, I had to lean heavily on noise reduction to get it to be acceptably clean. This target is demanding quite a bit of integration time, more than others of similar magnitude. I will update when I get more time on it.
