Description

I have recorded this image from my backyard in Bortle 6 area.

I made the series of exposures, with little hope to pick up any signal from such a faint object under a "white" suburban sky. I was surprised to find that it was there after calibration and integration.

My setup has its own significant vignetting which, combined with the specific gradient of the image, made them quite difficult and time-consuming to process together by using PixInsight's ABE and Multiscale Median Transformation techniques.

After that, the presence in the field of the powerful star Regulus and the strong optical reflections made the work more complex than usual.

Leo I is a dwarf galaxy part of our Local Group, 840kly away.

Because of its proximity to Regulus, it was discovered only in 1950.

Several other distant galaxies embellish the field, among others: IC591 (137Mly away) and PGC29573 (395Mly distance).
