Description

Fireworks Galaxy (NGC 6946) is about 25.2 million light-years away and lies on the border of constellations Cepheus and Cygnus.

Ten supernovae have been observed in NGC 6946 in the last century, this is an unusually high rate of supernovae production compared to our Milky Way galaxy, whose rate averages just one supernova event per century. For this reason in 2005 the galaxy was dubbed the "Fireworks Galaxy”.

Open star cluster 6939 (upper left) lies approximately 4000 light years away and is over a billion years old.
