Description

Barnard's E Nebula, B142 abd B143, are two dark nebulae, whose interstellar gas and dust obscure the light from a rich star-filled area of the Milky Way, forming the letter "E". Its size is about that of the full moon, or roughly 0.5 degrees, and its distance from earth is estimated at about 2,000 light years. Barnard's "E" is an ideal target for binoculars and wide-field instruments and is actually quite easy to see under dark skies and if you know what to look for.

The bright star on the left is Gamma Aquilae, formally known as Tarazed, and is magnitude 2.7, easily visible naked eye. It is 395 light years away.

The field of the image is 3.0 degrees by 2.0 degrees.
