M108 is a spiral galaxy in Ursa Major constellation; its apparent dimension is 8.3’ x 2.5’ and is 45 million of light years away.

Its arms are strongly obscured by large complexes of dark nebulae and interstellar dust, which make the galactic core invisible.

Even if it was observed by the famous astronomer Charles Messier, it was never inserted inside its Catalogue because at that time it was already published, so curiously it was inserted inside the Catalogue only in 1953.

This image was taken under a very polluted sky due to many lamp streets surrounding my home terrace. I did anyway a very long exposure and I was able to catch the lights of 34 very faint galaxies visible in all the field of the image.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.

Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
