Description

This pair of interesting barred galaxies is located in the constellation of Ursa Major at a declination of +48 degrees.

NGC 3583 is the bright barred spiral galaxy at upper left, located 100 million light years away. This galaxy spans 2.5 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to an actual diameter of 70,000 light years. I love the disturbed shape of this disk – the irregular dust lanes, the star clusters scattered throughout, the overall S-shape, and particularly the Vorontsov-Velyaminov row to the right of the core. An interesting companion galaxy (SDSS J111415.42+481934.2) is visible just above and left of NGC 3583, but it is not clear if it is causing the observed disturbance.

NGC 3577 is the beautiful barred ring galaxy. This galaxy is believed to be much further away than NGC 3583. The bar is long and has an ansae at each end. From the ends of the bar, strong arms extend out for over 360 degrees. But most interestingly, a complete mid-disk ring has been formed, with the typical arm shape being closed in a nearly perfect circular ring.

Many other small galaxies are visible in the background. I particularly like the small delicate reverse S-shaped galaxy (MCG+08-21-004) above right of NGC 3577.
