Description

Here is another study of the Moon. This was captured at ~4am on 12th January 2023, when the Moon was 18 days & 19 hours old. In effect a waning, gibbous Moon.

This colour image is of an area in the southern highlands of the Moon and is south up. This area is remarkably pockmarked with craters and I love the contrast with those in deep shadow versus those in moderate shadow. Clearly being so near the limb there is considerable foreshortening.

The 2nd image shows the location of the capture against the Moon as it appeared to me at the time. i.e south up.

The large crater at right with an array of small craters within its boundary is Maurolycus.  It was named after 16th century Italian mathematician Francesco Maurolico and is 114kms in diameter. It has largely obliterated an older and unnamed crater on its southern boundary. Next to it is Barocius (83kms diameter),with Barocius B on its edge. At upper left in the image are two large craters deep in shadow. The smaller is Pitiscus (82 kms in diameter) and the larger is Hommel. Hommel is 120kms in diameter and has several quite large craters on its boundary, which are difficult to make out in my image, due to the depth of the shadows. In fact, I found it quite challenging to identify the crater for this reason. It is from the Pre-Nectarian period, 4.55 to 3.92 billion years ago and showing its age. Imagine that!
