Description

M33, the Triangulum Galaxy. So-called because it's in the constellation Triangulum... which is shaped like a triangle. Not an equilateral triangle or anything... just a triangle. It's worth remembering the ancient Greeks spent a good amount of time very drunk.

It's the third largest member of our local group after Andromeda and the Milky Way, but much less massive than either. M33 is an important rung on the distance ladder we establish to measure distances in the Universe, with Cepheids, an eclipsing binary distance, measurements from the tip of the red giant branch, and a water maser distance. The bright red regions are clouds of Hydrogen, with the largest being about the size of the star formation region in Orion (even has it's own designation - NGC604).
