Description

This object is a beautiful galaxy group located 50 million light years away in the constellation of Virgo at a declination of +13 degrees. Markarian's Chain is named after an Armenian astronomer, Dr. Benjamin Markarian, who discovered their common motion in the 1960s.  This stretch of galaxies forms part of the Virgo Cluster.

The brightest galaxies in the image are the 3 huge Messier ellipticals, but the prettiest object to me is the pair of interacting galaxies at center known as The Eyes (Arp 120), with a spectacular sprawling dust lane. Just to the upper right of the Eyes, I like the tiny blue irregular galaxy IC 3355.

The bright galaxies in the image are beautiful. But I also enjoy the hundreds of faint galaxies scattered throughout the background and visible in the full resolution view.
