Description

Thor's Helmet is an nice emission nebula in Canis Major. From Wikipedia, the nebula's distance is roughly 12K light years with an extent of 30 light years. The age is estimated between 80K and 240K years.

Thor's Helmet is a nice visual and photographic object even given that it's just a bit lower than ideal for northern observers. In this image, taken at f/2.2, I beat down the stars a bit, but there's really no good way to tame the field....it's so rich! The image was taken with an OSC camera. Just over half the data was taken in my backyard, the other half acquired while visiting the TAAA CAC dark site in AZ.
