Description

Found within the constellation of Ursa Major, Bode's Galaxy is a relatively nearby galactic neighbor at 12 million light years distant. Named after its discoverer in 1774, the German stargazer Johann Bode, the galaxy was later cataloged as M81 by the French astronomer Charles Messier. Approximately half the size of our own Milky Way, this galaxy is a grand spiral pinwheel extending almost 90,000 light years from edge to edge. Star formation is now happening in its spiral arms as evidenced by the blue and reddish hues of countless reflection and emission nebulas. At its core is a supermassive black hole of no less than 70 million solar masses.
