Description

This image captures two small Arp objects located 120 million light years away in the northern constellation of Cepheus. This is one of the few areas of the sky where one can capture two Arp objects in the same narrow field of view. At a declination of almost 86 degrees, these two objects are the closest major deep sky objects to Polaris.

The large face-on spiral galaxy at the center is NGC 2276. This galaxy is also Arp 25, categorized as a "spiral galaxy with one heavy arm". The large elliptical galaxy 6 minutes to the right is NGC 2300. Arp 114 consists of both of these galaxies, categorized as an "elliptical galaxy close to and perturbing a spiral galaxy". Both galaxies have diameters of about 100,000 years. The bright 8th magnitude star near the image center is HD 51141.

I love the structure of NGC 2276 - the core which is displaced well left and above the center, the large single arm at the top, 3+ parallel arms at the bottom, and the intense star formation which appears to be leading to numerous active regions (super star clusters?) throughout the galaxy but especially to the left. The major arms all appear to be Vorontsov-Velyaminov rows (straight segments with similar angles between segments). The formation of these fascinating V-V rows is not well understood.

Many other interesting galaxies of various types are seen in the background.
